In the sixth century, Emperor Justinian the Great (482-565) inaugurated an ambitious program of theological, political, cultural, and military reforms, setting the foundations for many later achievements of the Empire. This remarkably elegant cross simultaneously projects refinement and strength, wisdom and power. This cross adorned numerous liturgical vessels and architectural wonders throughout the Empire.
